This table gives values of the ionization constant Kw (also known as the equilibrium constant) of the reaction 2H2O ↔ H3O+(aq) + OH−(aq). Kw is defined as where ai is the dimensionless activity of species i. The activities are on the molality basis for ions and mole fraction basis for water molecules. It is assumed that the activity of H3O+(aq) is the same as the activity of H+(aq), so that Kw is numerically equal to the equilibrium constant for the ionization reaction of water, H2O = H+(aq) + OH−(aq), that is most commonly used in the literature.
In the table, the ionization constant Kw values are expressed as pKw = −log10(Kw) as calculated using an analytical equation given in Refs. 1-3 where Kw is presented as a function of temperature and density from 0 °C to 800 °C and 0 g cm−3 to 1.25 g cm−3.
