The surface tension γ of about 230 liquids is tabulated here as a function of temperature. Values of γ are given in units of millinewtons per meter (mN m-1), which is equivalent to dyn cm-1 in cgs units. The uncertainty of the values is 0.1 to 0.2 mN m-1 or less in most cases. Values at temperatures between the points tabulated can be obtained by linear interpolation to a good approximation. A more extensive compilation of surface tension may be found in Ref. 1. Column definitions for the table are as follows.
Column heading | Definition |
Name | Liquid name; liquids are listed alphabetically by name |
Synonym | Common synonym |
Mol. form. | Molecular formula of liquid |
γ(temp) | Surface tension at temperature (in °C) within parentheses, in units mN m-1 |

Most of the values from Ref. 1 were obtained by capillary measurements in which the liquid phase is in contact with its vapor plus air at ambient pressure. Values from Refs. 3-6 refer to measurements in which the liquid and vapor phases are in equilibrium, in the absence of other gases. Details may be found in the references.
