The glass transition temperature Tg is the temperature at which an amorphous polymer changes from a viscous, rubbery state to a hard, brittle condition. Polymer names in this table are based on the IUPAC structure-based nomenclature system described in the table “Nomenclature for Organic Polymers” in this section. Within each category, names are listed in alphabetical order. Source-based and trivial names are also given (in italics) for the most common polymers. The tables do not include polymers for which Tgt is not clearly defined because of variability of structure or because of reactions taking place near the glass transition. The polymer categories included in each table are as follows.
Table 1 | Table 2 | Table 3 |
Acyclic Carbon Chains | Chains with Heteroatomic Units | Chains with Carbocyclic Units |
Polyalkadienes | Main chain oxide units
Polyalkenes | Main chain ester or anhydride units
Polyacrylics | Main chain amide units
Polymethacrylics | Main chain urethane units
Polyvinyl ethers, alcohols, and ketones | Main chain siloxanes
Polyvinyl halides and nitriles | Main chain sulfur-contining units
Polyvinyl esters | Main chain heterocyclic units
Polstyrenes |
All values of Tgt cited in this table have been determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) except those values indicated by:
(D) | Dynamic method |
(Dil) | Dilatometry |
(M) | Mechanical method |
